Life and death. Death and life. Two sides of the same coin. How might we spend this coin, knowing that we cannot escape or resist our mortal nature? How might the fact of our mortality enliven us? Perhaps by turning towards it, rather than away . Bio: Reverend Karen G. Johnston (she/hers) is serves as Senior Minister at the First Unitarian Universalist Society Burlington in Vermont. Originally from Oregon where generations of her family farmed in the Hood River Valley, she has spent her adulthood primarily on the East Coast. She is the adoptive mother of two adult children and was a licensed clinical social worker for two decades before becoming a minister. The heart of her spiritual practice is befriending death, strongly influenced by Buddhism and her meditation practice. She is the founder of Date with Death Club, a secular, justice-affirming curriculum that invites all to explore mortality in community. Some of her writing can be found at her blog, Awake & Witness.
