From the person who keeps an extra everything “just in case”, to those of us who have simply accumulated more stuff than we need, our possessions can too easily come to possess us. No wonder there are so many books and television shows about decluttering, minimalism, and even “The Gentle Swedish Art of Death Cleaning”. In addition, there are now life coaches who earn their living helping others declutter, downsize, or clean out after a person’s death. Practical tips for paring down our stuff are widely available; today we’ll talk less about the “how” and more about the “why”.
