Of course it hurts when buds burst
why else spring’s hesitation?
These opening lines of a poem by Swedish author Karin Boye invite us to recognize that Spring’s awakening, like our own, is more than a celebration of rebirth: It’s a release from bondage. The path to freedom is fraught with doubt, danger, and death. The Passover and Easter stories, the spirits of our ancestors, the community of this congregation, and the earth herself challenge and nourish us along the way.
