Few topics are more polarized or polarizing than abortion. People on both sides of the issue are convinced of the certitude of their positions, and acrimonious advocacy aimed at changing other people’s views deepens the chasm between us and fosters demonization of those who hold opposing views. Today’s sermon is not about abortion per se, but about the power of shifting the paradigm on this and other divisive issues from debate to dialog, from advocating to attending, and from certitude to curiosity in order to build relationships and deepen understanding.
