Does god exist? : an answer for today
by Hans Kung.
Garden City, NY : Doubleday, c.1980.
In this book Kung takes the reader through the ‘Modern Era’s’ most challenging intellects and prophetic voices as they wrestle with the ‘Question of God’.
Hans Küng (born 1928) is a Swiss Catholic priest, theologian, and author, who was famously censured by the Vatican in 1979 and declared no longer authorized to teach “Catholic theology. ” He has written many other books, such as On Being a Christian, Eternal Life?: Life After Death as a Medical, Philosophical, and Theological Problem, etc.
He wrote in the “Acknowledgements” section of this 1980 book, “This book was originally intended to be complimentary to ‘On Being a Christian.’ ”
He asserts that belief in God answers the three great questions in life: [1] Who are we? (“If God exists, then … we are very finite, defective beings and yet infinitely expectant, hoping, yearning beings”); [2] Where do we come from? (“there is an answer to the great question where do hydrogen and matter come from”); and [3] Where are we going? (pg. 563-564). If God exists, “I can… confidently affirm the truth and meaningfulness of my existence… Because God is the ultimate meaning of my life…”
