Karl Paul Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971) was an American theologian and “public intellectual” during the mid-20th century. His other books include The Nature and Destiny of Man: A Christian Interpretation (2 Volume Set) and The Irony of American History.

His wife wrote in the Preface to this 1974 book, “The prayers in this volume have been selected from those Reinhold Niebuhr wrote and used over a span of fifty years. They have been edited according to contemporary liturgical usage (e.g., replacing “thou” with “you”)… The sermons, however, all come from the later years of his life and are edited from recordings. He never wrote out his sermons… Much of his later work was in the field of social and political ethics. But many of his friends, and he and I as well, wanted to have his prayers and sermons also available to show the religious context and reference of his social concern.”
